Urban Meditations
In the Group Show Urban Meditations at Articulate Project Space, I am showing my work 'Ode to Opposites'
My movement through the urban environment is accompanied by encounters with and reflections on the blurred space between opposites.
In this space I observe the push and pull of dualities: Material fragments discarded and blown along the urban laneway with their ephemerality in contrast to unyielding permanent objects; doors and windows transitioning between the opened and closed; the static abutting the dynamic; the darkness of the enclosed and the lightness of the exposed.
The difference between the fixed and precarious nature of conditions, materials and objects interests me.
So does the practice of upcycling.
I discover and salvage discarded objects that resonate with my aesthetic and introduce these found ready-mades into my process.
The three pieces which form my artwork ‘Ode to Opposites’, are constructed from metal frames found discarded in the laneways of Surry Hills which act as supports to naturally dyed and spray-painted cotton fabric, repurposed yoga matting, and chord. I often use yoga matting for its association with meditation and restorative practices.
‘Ode to Opposites’ explores the space between tension and balance in the artwork itself, with the contrast of hard and soft materials and their manipulations, embodying the opposites experienced and reflected upon when moving through the urban:
Fixed and Ephemeral; Resilient and Vulnerable; Constrained and Detached
Controlled and Spontaneous; Concealed and Revealed; Flexible and Unyielding
